Within this period, a thorough system of controls and tests produced a precise report measuring direct and indirect emission performance, constantly raising standards. Thanks to an in-depth analysis, production processes will be analysed: several procedures and tools will allow excellent levels of energy efficiency and savings, resulting in significant reductions in emission thresholds. These thresholds, in a regime of total transparency with stakeholders and the public, will be faithfully reported in Metallurgica San Marco’s Sustainability Report, and matched with precise reduction targets.
The project in its full extension will span a three-year period and will result in extremely stringent international certifications, sustainability reports with ambitious targets and broad thematic analyses, involving social and governance spheres in addition to the environmental aspect.

Metallurgica San Marco has implemented a carbon neutrality strategy that involves compensating for all direct greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing carbon credits. In 2021, the company purchased 3886 carbon credits in the voluntary offsetting market, selecting three projects that focus on two intervention strategies: promoting energy production from renewable sources and reducing emissions that are harmful to both the environment and health. This is a worldwide commitment that involves both the American and Asian continents. Specifically, in India and Brazil, Metallurgica San Marco has supported the development of hydroelectric power generation through its voluntary offsetting strategy. In the state of Mato Grosso, at the Braço Norte III plant, the action aims to reduce direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by over 40,000 tonnes per year. The project aims to achieve three goals: reduce emissions by eliminating fossil fuels, produce clean renewable energy for the local population, and create new jobs for the communities in the state of Mato Grosso.

In the Karnataka region in India, Metallurgica San Marco is involved in a hydroelectric energy production project, harnessing the power of the Kemp Hole river and contributing to the economic development of the Hassan district. This initiative generates clean energy, creates employment opportunities for the local population and reduces GHG emissions, with a significant contraction of over 48,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. In Mexico, the company is also using carbon credits to reduce N2O emissions during the nitric acid production process. Metallurgica San Marco believes in a world that is inclusive and sustainable, where environmental impact is minimised, and innovative projects and development are carried out where they are most needed. This is the path towards achieving zero emissions.

In accordance with the aims of the Kyoto Protocol, Metallurgica San Marco has launched its first initiative in the Central Asian country, working jointly with the State Forestry Corps and a team of agronomists. The project is a conscious reforestation initiative that aims to achieve both social and environmental objectives. On the one hand, reforestation leads to an increase in oxygen release into the atmosphere, which helps to counteract toxic CO2 emissions. On the other hand, the skillful selection of trees for planting, carried out in direct collaboration with local authorities, fosters the involvement of the local population and triggers a virtuous cycle that has valuable implications for the country’s development and livelihood.
